Vocabulary Words - Part 1

 

This is the beginning. These words are slightly above the typical, standard words you hear every day. These will start to increase your vocabulary while not making it too difficult in the beginning so that you become too frustrated quickly. Each word is given with a pronunciation key that allows you to articulate it properly.

 

Abstract (ab-strakt)

Abstract can be used as a verb, noun, or an adjective.

 

Noun

A summary of text such as a small blurb defining a document.

The abstract of the document gave a clear understanding of the text inside the document.

 

Verb

To take away.

 

The nurse abstracted a sample from the patient.

 

Adjective

The scientist laid out an abstract idea for the research.

 

Benevolent (buh-nev-uh-lunt)

Adjective

A desire to help and benefit others.

Her benevolent attitude helped others succeed.

 

Capricious (cuh-pree-shus)

Adjective

Erratic behavior; tendency to change opinions often

Her capricious nature made friends unsure of her decision.

 

Devious (dee-vee-us)

Adjective

Departing from an indirect way; shifty

His devious nature made Russ friends distrust him.

 

Eccentric (ex-ent-rik)

Eccentric can be used as a noun or adjective.

 

Adjective

Deviating from normal character or practice.

His eccentric behavior made Charles a unique person, but not employable.

 

Noun

A person who has unusual behavior.

 

The eccentric has views that are often shunned by society.

 

Inquisitive (in-qwiz-uh-tiv)

Adjective

Curious; desire for knowledge

The inquisitive boy wanted to know everything about the robot toy.

 

Pertinent (pert-in-ent)

Adjective

Relating to important or significant information.

 

The document laid out the pertinent information for everyone to know before the press conference.
